Wolfgang Benz in discussion with Jeanine Meerapfel:
Those who do not remember, repeat their mistakes

To start the new AKADEMIE-DIALOG series, Wolfgang Benz, a historian specialising in prejudice research, and Jeanine Meerapfel, Akademie president and filmmaker, take the book Juden unerwünscht (2016) edited by Wolfgang Benz and Brigitte Mihok as the starting point for a discussion about xenophobia and preconceived negative stereotypes. In particular, they will consider the aversion towards victims of genocide and the reasons underlying it, and explore the comparison to today’s Islamophobia. Can a lack of legal recourse and the past’s sins of omission lead to new resentments in Germany?

The AKADEMIE-DIALOG series is dedicated to personal discussion. In each of the events in this focused format, Jeanine Meerapfel invites one renowned figure from the arts, sciences, politics or cultural policy to enter into an intensive dialogue on a specific topic. Afterwards, the audience is invited to contribute to this exchange on current issues. The discussions are held in the Club Room on the 4th floor of the Akademie der Künste at Pariser Platz.

From 1990 until 2011, Wolfgang Benz held the chair of modern history at the Technical University of Berlin. As Director of the Center for Research on Antisemitism, he oversaw the publication of the eight-volume standard reference work Handbuch des Antisemitismus. His most recent publications include Fremdenfeinde und Wutbürger: Verliert die demokratische Gesellschaft ihre Mitte? (2016, Metropol Verlag).
