The Breath of a House is the Sound of Voices Within

35 international JUNGE AKADEMIE scholarship holders present their new works in an exhibition accompanied by a series of events. The title “The Breath of a House is the Sound of Voices Within”, a quote by the American architect John Hejduk (1929 – 2000), emphasises the field of tension between body and space, politics and poetry, but also mysticism and nature, introspection and the outer gaze, in which the artists move. It also represents the transdisciplinary nature of the works and projects presented and the transcending of boundaries as practiced by the scholarship holders. 

The photos, video works, spatial and sound installations, textile works, sculptures, drawings and paintings presented in the exhibition question the aesthetic, social and territorial boundaries and convey alternative forms of viewing and listening. Work on a new phonetic alphabet, the compilation of thousands of drawings into a stop-motion film or the collective embroidery of symbols and images create poetic snapshots of milieus and portray communities, emotions and voices. In the two-day programme of events, the body, its language and movement in relation to architecture form the immediate field of energy in which the artists share their critical view of present-day realities. Concerts, readings, workshops, film screenings and performances are part of a tightly knit programme held at the different locations of the Akademie der Künste, bringing together traditional aesthetic rituals and art forms, contemporary theatrical productions and queer subculture. “The Breath of a House” moves at the “speed” of the road trip, follows an attitude to life between ecstasy and Grindr dates, or slows down in the contemplative role play of a performance.

“The Breath of a House is the Sound of Voices Within” is permeated by the challenge of finding aesthetic expression and the search for methods of care and remembering, for images of the self and the world and for a voice as an expression of resilience and resistance in the face of current crises and wars.
