Das abenteuerliche Leben des Heinrich Zschokke
A Prussian from Magdeburg is drawn to idyllic Switzerland, the turmoil of the French Revolution takes hold of him, too; he becomes a co-founder of the Helvetic Republic, one of the most respected Swiss democrats and most widely read writers in German of the 19th century. In 1802, the young Kleist met Zschokke, six years his senior, in Bern; to whose incidental suggestion theatre owes one of its most grandiose plays: The Broken Jug. Author and director Matthias Zschokke dedicates a cinematic sketch of his life to his ancestor.
