Timm Ulrichs: “Weiter im Text”
“Total artist” Timm Ulrichs fought from the very beginning for independence from the constraints of the art market, for freedom in terms of the style and meaning of conceptual art as well as for recognition and protection of the idea, not the object. Thus, he associates himself with a utopia of modernity that fuses life and art. The Advertising Centre for Total Art / Banalism / Extemporism, founded by Ulrichs in 1961, still forms the point of departure and reference for his work today, with its combination of living and working spaces.
The artist himself, his body, mind and social and urban environment are at the centre, in that he transforms himself into the First Living Artwork including participation by the audience. The conceptual artist also occupies the broad field of language and experiments with its boundaries and the logical misunderstandings that arise in the relationship between word, concept, meaning and in correlation with the object.
The exhibition “Weiter im Text” (Continue in the Text), which takes place on the occasion of the Käthe Kollwitz Prize 2020, explores his artistic notion of the end of the sayable and unsayable with a selection of expansive works, prints, objects and films.
