Francisco Mangado
The 2017 Berlin Art Prize for architecture is awarded to Spanish architect Francisco Mangado. One day after the award ceremony he is giving a lecture about his work.
The jury of this year’s Berlin Art Prize, comprising Thomas Herzog, Victor López Cotelo and Winfried Nerdinger, said about Mangado’s work: "The distinctive external appearance of his buildings corresponds to a synthesis of structure and construction in their interiors, with the management of daylight substantially underpinning the expression of spatial organisation. The architect lends his structures individual character and recognisability, making them into identity-forming features in their urban or rural surroundings.”
Born in Navarre in 1957, Francisco Mangado earned his architecture degree from the University of Navarre School of Architecture in 1982, and has since made this institution the center of a teaching career that has seen him serve as Guest Professor at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor at Yale’s School of Architecture, and Guest Professor at l’École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. He is a Professor of Projects at his alma mater besides Professor Extraordinaire of Projects in its Master of Architectural Design program. In June 2008 he set up the Architecture and Society Foundation, which aims to help increase architecture’s interaction with other fields of creation, thought and action. Combined with his academic activity and dedication to the programs of the Foundation is an architectural practice that he runs from his studio in Pamplona.
