Ein Dorf 1950–2022
Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler und Ludwig Schirmer

Exhibition
28 Feb – 4 May 2025, Opening 27 February 2025
Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg 10, 10557 Berlin

On 27 February 2025, the exhibition “Ein Dorf 1950-2022. Ute Mahler, Werner Mahler und Ludwig Schirmer” opens at the Akademie der Künste.
The project has its origins in the village of Berka in Thuringia, but extends far beyond the borders of that village. Political and societal changes, technological developments, fashions and individuals form thematic threads that tie the individual works together. The more than 150 photographs in the exhibition interweave personal destinies and world history, autobiographical references and artistic approaches. All four works depict one location over a period of 70 years. They explore questions about continuity and change, about home and childhood, about moving away and returning, about old and new, about the familiar and the unknown. The exhibition was curated by Marit Lena Herrmann.

Parallel to “Ein Dorf”, the Akademie der Künste is showing the exhibition “what stands between us. Photography as a Medium for Chronicling”, the central festival exhibition of EMOP Berlin – European Month of Photography 2025.
