Lecture by Ian Ritchie in the Akademie series “On the Duty and the Power of Architecture”

On 19 October 2023, architect and Akademie member Ian Ritchie will speak on the topic “In Pursuit of Non-Linear Beauty” at the Akademie der Künste. The welcome address will be given by HG Merz, Deputy Director of the Architecture Section; the subsequent discussion with Ian Ritchie will be led by Anh-Linh Ngo, also a member of the Akademie. With this event, the Architecture Section of the Akademie der Künste continues its lecture and discussion series “On the Duty and the Power of Architecture”.

The British architect and planner Ian Ritchie (born in 1947 in Hove/Sussex) has been a member of the Akademie since 2013. Since he founded his own firm Ian Ritchie Architects in London in 1981 (since 2021: ritchie*studio, www.ritchie.studio), the practice has received over 100 national and international awards. His most recent buildings include the award-winning Sainsbury Wellcome Centre, the Royal Academy of Music and the Angela Burgess Recital Hall, all in London, as well as the conversion and refurbishment of the Farsons Brewery and the creation of Trident Park, both in Malta. Ritchie’s new book Renewal Architects. The Transformation of Farsons Brewery Malta, was published in July.Ritchie is, among other things, a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London (professor of architecture there from 2004 to 2013), a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects; since 2009 he has been an honorary guest professor of architecture at the University of Liverpool.

In the series “On the Duty and the Power of Architecture”, Akademie members showcase current projects and talk about the responsibility and influence of architecture and building culture on our lives. Previous guests have included Shigeru Ban, Klaus Bollinger, Anne Lacaton, Daniel Libeskind, Volkwin Marg, Dorte Mandrup, Volker Staab, Kjetil Thorsen.
