Reports from Elsewhere: Members’ Talks

Event on 6 May on the occasion of the spring General Assembly of Members of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin

On 5 and 6 May 2017, the Akademie der Künste in Berlin is hosting the spring General Assembly of its Members. The points on the agenda include Section Sessions, discussions on future programmes, and the election of new Akademie Members. At the invitation of Akademie President Jeanine Meerapfel, Russian writer Ljudmila Ulitzkaja is giving a talk in the Plenary Session examining the various perspectives on Russia and Europe’s relationship and, in this context, considering the role of Russia’s new ‘protest generation’ of discontented youth.

On May 6 from 7pm, to mark the close of the General Assembly weekend, the Akademie building at Hanseatenweg 10 is presenting an extensive public programme with discussions, films, music and exhibitions. In three round tables moderated by Hans Gerhard Hannesen, Carola Bauckholt, Ulrike Grossarth, Barrie Kosky, Katja Lange-Müller, Ulrich Peltzer, Matthias Sauerbruch, Volker Schlöndorff, Andres Veiel and Angela Winkler discuss and exchange views on their work and experiences “elsewhere”. That “elsewhere” might be a faraway country, though it could equally designate a socially neglected milieu or the struggle for one’s own work, may reflect public concerns and issues, but also personal experiences.

In addition to the live Members’ Talks, other artists from all Sections introduce themselves and their works in video interviews produced by Kathrin Röggla. These interviews also offer a very personal insight into each artists’ work. An audiovisual recollection of “Uncertain States”, the main focus of the Akademie’s programme last autumn, documents its key features and aspects. The soundtrack of the evening’s events is provided by tango trio Animales Alemanes led by Peter Reil. The exhibitions “Otto Bartning (1883-1959). Architect of Social Modernism” and “Agora Artes 2017/Interplay of the Arts” are both open from Saturday until the end of the programme.

At present, the Akademie der Künste has 411 Members. The database of Members can be accessed at www.adk.de. The Archive of the Akademie has holdings including over 1200 artistic estates. In 2015, filmmaker Jeanine Meerapfel was elected as Akademie der Künste President with writer Kathrin Röggla as Vice President. The General Assembly of Members is held twice a year in spring and autumn.
