Uncertain States. Artistic Strategies in States of Emergency
Exhibition

Special events programme during the last week of the show with Natasha A. Kelly, Sonia Kennebeck, Wim Wenders, Horst Bredekamp, Stefan Weber, Armin Nassehi, Grada Kilomba, Chantal Mouffe, et al.

The exhibition Uncertain States. Artistic Strategies in States of Emergency can still be viewed at the Akademie der Künste on Hanseatenweg until Sunday, 15 January. In daily events taking place during the final week of the exhibition, artists and scholars navigate and address the central question raised by this season’s main subject area at the Akademie: How do those working in the arts and cultural sector react to current political and social upheavals as well as the ensuing uncertainties?

Contemporary works of art by Francis Alÿs, Ayşe Erkmen, William Forsythe, Mona Hatoum, Isaac Julien and others in the exhibition are juxtaposed with historical objects and documents from the Akademie’s archives related to experiences of flight and exile by artists such as Bertolt Brecht, Walter Benjamin and Kurt Tucholsky. A curator’s talk will take place at the closing event on 15 January.

At the conclusion of the DISKURSE [DISCOURSES] lecture series Belgian political scientist Chantal Mouffe will talk about “Artistic Practices in Times of Post-Politics” (Sun, 15 Jan.). In four additional DISCOURSES: the communication studies expert Natasha A. Kelly explains the term “Deutschsein” [being German] (Sun, 8 Jan.); art historian Horst Bredekamp will talk with the Islam scholar Stefan Weber about the destruction of World Cultural Heritage in the Syrian city Palmyra (Thur, 12 Jan.); the sociologist Armin Nassehi casts an alternative view on migrant life in his lecture “Desintegration als Ziel. Ein anderer Blick aufs Migrantische” [Targeted Disintegration] (Fri, 13 Jan.); and author Grada Kilomba shows post-colonial connections between the cities of Luanda, Lisbon and São Paulo (Sat, 14 Jan.).

Sonia Kennebeck presents her documentary National Bird on the US Air Force drone war programme. A discussion about the film follows with the director, Wim Wenders, Andreas Schüller and Rüdiger Suchsland (Wed, 11 Jan.).
