6th Academy Discussions looks at a wounded Europe

Which are Europe’s real borders – and who secures them? Do Greece, Italy, Spain and France have to protect their borders themselves or is there a European approach? Austria, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have their own answers to refugees seeking asylum, even to the extent of building walls. What does Brussels say in response? Are there “European borders”? The Brexit as well as Germany’s “arrangement” with Turkey (whose democracy is meanwhile called into question) have opened up other areas of conflict.

The upcoming editions of the Academy Discussions are focusing on the European crisis, a debate opened with this event on 5 October. For the discussion on Europe’s “external wounds”, Academy president Jeanine Meerapfel is joined by Ben Gibson, British film producer and director of the DFFB (Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin), sociologist Günter Seufert from the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP), author Zafer Şenocak, originally from Turkey and living in Germany, and Slovenian author Aleš Šteger. The discussion is presented by political scientist Almut Möller.

The Academy Discussions on Europe continue in early 2017, addressing new forms of terrorism and the economic conflicts in the Eurozone. “Uncertain States. Artistic Strategies in States of Emergency”, the autumn focus programme opening on 14 October in Berlin, is also putting European policy issues on the Akademie der Künste’s agenda of events.
